The final bout of the second season of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) in the Cruiserweight category (first heavy weight -90.7 kg.) Between Cuban Yuniel Dorticos (24-1, 22 KOs) and Mairis Briedis (26-1, 19 KOs) from Latvia, was to be held on 21.03.2020, in Riga, Latvia, in the Arena Riga ring, but there was a collapse around the world called the coronavirus COVID-19, which resulted in this intriguing match, and indeed all the matches, around the world, was cancelled!
At stake, this final bout of the second WBSS season, two titles had to stand at once: International Boxing Federation World Cruiser Title and World Boxing Council Diamond Cruiser Title, and the final fight itself was supposed to take place in the same “Arena Riga” ring where the fighters had their semi-final fights: Mairis Briedis passed the scandal Krzysztof Glowacki (31-2, 19 KOs) from Poland, and Yuniel Dorticos brightly knocked out previously unbeaten American Andrew Tabiti (17-1, 13 KOs).
The semi-final fight of Mairis Briedis (26-1, 19 KOs) with the Pole Krzysztof Glowacki, recall, was overshadowed by several “muddy” situations with violation of the rules by both boxers and referee errors, but the protest of the team Krzysztof Glowacki (lost ahead of schedule in 3-th round) on the annulment of the result was not satisfied. More precisely, judging by the decision of the WBO, it was partially satisfied – but this is a topic for a separate material, but so far the Latvian boxer has focused on the upcoming fight against Yuniel Dorticos.
Both fighters spent about 95% of all preparations for the upcoming fight, investing energy, time and a lot of material resources, but the bout was canceled due to quarantine in connection with the coronavirus COVID-19 and rescheduled for May 16, 2020, although it is already clear that the date it will be transferred further, and it is now more likely that this fight will not take place in the foreseeable future, since quarantine in Latvia is planned to be extended for another 3 months, during which all countries borders are closed, and can’t come sparring partners for prepare boxers, and all the gyms are closed also, as well as all public areas are crowded, and generally what will happen at all, No one knows!
COVID-19 touched absolutely all and all spheres of human activity, causing and causing enormous damage in everything! Now it’s not known what will happen to the ratings of boxers who will not be able to conduct their fights for at least the next few months, which means that the count in moving up or down the rating for each fighter for the same BoxRec will be violated! The rating cannot be frozen for an indefinite time, and the longer the problem with COVID-19 is not resolved, the more chaos may arise as a result of the selection of boxing pairs and champion matches in the future. According to the rules of most boxing federations, a fighter flies out of the rating of active boxers if he does not enter the ring for some time and accordingly loses his position in the rating. Also in most boxing federations, fighters cannot meet in the ring with each other if there is a big gap between them in ranking positions, and just because of downtime without fights, the athlete falls down the rating and will not be allowed to participate in those fights in the future which he and his team were counting on.
Unfortunately, everything is now in the hands of above, and all the fans can only wait for the permission of everything that happens in the world!
