The decisive fight of the World Boxing Super Series – WBSS, in the Cruiserweight weight category (first heavyweight -90.7 kg.) Between the Cuban Yuniel Dorticos (24-1, 22 KOs) and Mairis Briedis (26-1, 19 KOs) from Latvia finally took place 26.09.2020 at the Munich television studio Plazamedia Broadcasting Center, however, the audience could not personally attend the match, the match took place in empty stands, without spectators.
– There were three titles at stake in this fight – the IBF championship belt, the “The Ring” magazine belt and the special WBSS trophy – the Mohammed Ali Cup.
– Initially, the bout was scheduled for 21.03.2020 in Riga, but due to the spread of Covid-19, it was postponed to 16.05.2020. Then the fight scheduled for May 16 was postponed, and last week it turned out that the fight between Briedis and Dorticos will take place on September 26 in Munich, Germany.
– 35-year-old Briedis won 26 victories during his professional career, 19 of which by knockout, and suffered one defeat – in the semifinals of the first WBSS season in Riga, he lost to Ukrainian Alexander Usik.
– In turn, 34-year-old Cuban Dorticos won 26 victories, 24 of which by knockout, and also suffered one defeat – a week after Briedis lost to Usik, the Cuban in Sochi lost to Russian Murat Gassiev in the second WBSS semifinals.
And finally, the fighters met in the ring and showed an active and tense fight, in which, visually, the Cuban fighter probably left behind the initial rounds 2 and also managed to draw a couple of rounds, and the rest of rounds 8 were taken by a Latvian fighter who was simply faster and more diverse than his counterpart, although the fight itself was not replete with some kind of tough exchange of punches, but the overall superiority of Mairis Briedis in shock combinations, functional preparation and the general plan for the fight was evident, as a result of which a deserved victory was won by the side judges’ decision with : Mikael Hook 111-117 | Joerg Milke 114-114 | Matteo Montella 111-117! It’s amazing how referee Joerg Milke was able to discern a draw with a score of 114-114 in this fight, but this decision, of course, is on his conscience!
As a result, Mairis Briedis raised the hand winner’s!
